What Could Go Wrong with This Prediction on the 2026-27 NBA Season?
Straight from the hip — no research, no stats, no criteria. Just a feeling. Here are my predictions for the 2026-27 NBA season, and why I believe the Philadelphia 76ers finally end the drought.
This will come as a surprise to many of you who have followed my articles and posts over these past eight plus years. This is coming straight from the hip (heart), no research, no stats, no criteria, some might say no sense, but just a feeling. I'm joining the "don't confuse me with facts club". I get that from so many fans when I write about former or current players and teams in college or the NBA. Or when I give 10 reasons why I chose the best player to ever play basketball and he isn't the most popular. I am not being critical of anyone; everyone is entitled to their opinion. So, based on ONE game and maybe some "hunches" here are my predictions for the 2026-27 NBA season.
1. The 76ers have the best starting five in the NBA — period
I know they have a center who has played only 490 games in 10 years in the league. Joel Embiid has only played more than 60 games in a season 4 times in his 10-year career. But he is due some good "aura" AND he has never had a GOAT to inspire him.
2. Jaylen Brown is a superstar — and the Celtics will regret letting him leave Beantown
He is a career 20 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.9 assists man, and all those numbers go up in the playoffs. In the 2023-24 championship series, he averaged 23.1 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 3.2 assists. He played over 700 minutes and was the NBA Finals MVP.
3. Tyrese Maxey will be the MVP
Maxey is in his 7th year in the league and "finally" made his first All-NBA team. The fastest player in the league will benefit more from LeBron's passing than anyone else on the team. I'm not sure Maxey can improve on the 28 points per game average, but LeBron could help that .514 FG% go up. Maxey is 25 and playing in his 7th season in the NBA. (After his first season, he had it figured out.) AND he is my grandson's favorite player.
4. VJ Edgecombe is a building block
VJ Edgecombe made the All-Rookie First Team with the most votes along with Flagg and Knueppel. He played in 76 games and averaged almost 16 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.2 assists.
5. LeBron will lead the league in assists
LeBron will lead the league in assists and be the best facilitator in the NBA. Everyone on the 76ers is better with LeBron on the court. The number one goal for this soon-to-be 42-year-old "OLE TIMER" is an NBA Championship. Focused on a 5th championship and 5x Finals MVP. King James doesn't have much else to play for; he has it all.
6. The Sixers win their fourth NBA title — and their first since 1983
My sixth prediction: the Sixers win their fourth NBA title and first since 1983.
And IF this doesn't convince you; Wilt was one of my all-time favorites, Dr. J was "spectacular" and one of the 5 most entertaining players ever, Doug Collins grew up only 20 miles from me and is a friend, and Allen Iverson says that one of my favorite coaches, Larry Brown, who I got to know and spend some time with, took his game to another level while he played for the Sixers. There you have it, straight from the heart. What more could a fan want?
