I will start with the change that many of you shared, extend the 3-point shot to 25 feet and stop the arc at the free throw line extended. No more 22’ corner jumpers. I like it. Secondly, call fouls and stop all the hand checking that gives the defense the advantage AND discourages drives to the basket or makes it difficult for the offensive player to shoot mid-range jumpers. That would help scorers and cut down on so many of the 3s. Third, do not award an assist to a player who passes the ball to a teammate who makes a shot BEYOND the arc. Along those same lines, I do not think a big man that “merely” sets a screen and “hands” the ball off to a teammate beyond the arc who makes a 24-footer should get an assist. Is that really an assist? Fourth, this applies only to the collegiate game, adopt the 24-second clock just like the NBA. That would stop all the wasteful, worthless dribbling by one player for 15 seconds. It would speed up the game and make it more exciting. It would also turn the offense back into a “team” game, not a one-on-one contest. I would like to see the college game go to 4 quarters, like every other team sport. (That is a discussion for another post.)
As I stated in my earlier post, and in practically all my posts, I have played, coached, and been a fan of this great game for over 70 years. I loved playing and coaching in the 1960s through the 2000s. It is still a great game but there needs to be some “modifications” made. Too much emphasis on only one aspect of the game is not good.
One final note, several of you who read my post asked me what players that played before the 3-point arc would benefit most if they played today? I mentioned Jerry West, but I also think Pete Maravich would have really benefitted from the 3-point shot. I think the 3-pointer would have been good for Calvin Murphy, Tiny Archibald, and Doug Collins. There are others but these five come to mind.
