Seven Decades as a Player, Coach, and Fan
Jack Sutter fell in love with the game of basketball as an eight-year-old playing on a dirt court in the 50’s in Galatia, a small town in southern Illinois. He was an All-State basketball player and earned a basketball scholarship to play at the University of Missouri. He transferred from Missouri and played for Middle Tennessee State University for three years before graduating in 1967. He earned a Master of Arts degree from Eastern Michigan University.
Jack has taught and coached in the public school system in Detroit, Mi., Salem, Il., and Brandon, Fl. In 1970 his former college coach at MTSU, Ken Trickey, hired him on his staff at Oral Roberts University. During his four year tenure at ORU the basketball program went from an NAIA program to a D1 program. ORU won 118 games and lost only 23 games from 1969-1974. The ORU teams went to back to back NITs in 1972 and 1973.
In 1974 ORU played in the NCAA Tournament beating Syracuse and Louisville before losing to Kansas in the finals of the Elite Eight 93-90. ORU led the nation in scoring three of the five years that Coach Sutter was on the basketball staff.
Before moving to Florida in 1985, Jack was the head coach at Butler County Community College in El Dorado, Kansas for six years. His Butler teams were competitive in the very tough Jayhawk Juco Conference.
Jack has coached for 22-years at the D1 level, junior college, and high school level. He has coached several players who have played in the NBA.
