From Playing on a Dirt Court to Coaching in Madison Square Garden
Greatness is easy to recognize but often it is hard to define. Jack Sutter has played, coached, and been a fan of this great game that he loves for 70 years. During those years he has played against great players. He has coached great players and his teams’ have played against great players. In his journey he has discovered some common traits and characteristics that set the most elite players apart from the others. In the first chapter of his 159-page book he spells out, in detail, the 10 criteria that he uses to define greatness. Coach Sutter explains the reasons for why he picked each player in his Top 75, and ultimately, how he picked the G.O.A.T. Jack devotes a chapter in his book to the young players in the NBA, the players he refers to as “young guns”. He also has a chapter about the All-Decade teams beginning in the 1950’s when he first became a fan. Sutter has a bio on each player and a little known fact about each one that he calls a “gem”. This book is an easy and fun read for basketball fans of all ages.
“BookTrib” in their review of Sutter’s book had this to say. “For any passing basketball fan, naming the top five or ten should be no great mystery, except perhaps for their order. But as much as naming names and making picks, the great joy in this book is hearing Sutter talk basketball. Before he even gets to his list, he takes great pains to describe his methodology. And in so doing, he provides marvelous, entertaining anecdotes about so many players that it’s hard not to whet the readers’ appetites about exploring his actual picks. But whether you agree with his pick’s or not, he has succeeded in writing a provocative and entertaining book. The G.O.A.T.: The Quest to Find the Best is a fun, informative and nostalgic ride through one of the most popular sports in the world by one man who was truly smitten by it from the very beginning.”
